Your notes and your memory database stay on your computer. When you are signed in, a backup of your memories syncs to Locul’s cloud unless you choose Local-only. Locul does not sell your data or use it to train AI models.
You can see all of this in one place: Settings > Cloud and local.
What stays on your computer
- Your notes and files.
- Your memory database, kept in the hidden .locul folder in your home folder. Your bots live in the Locul folder in your home folder.
- Your own AI keys, if you add them.
- Your bots, as plain files in your Bots folder.
What goes to the cloud
Memory backup. When you are signed in and storage is set to Cloud, your memories sync to Locul’s cloud. The backup holds the memory text, note titles and locations, and the people, companies and topics Locul found. Delete a memory and it is removed from the cloud too.
AI processing. To turn notes into memories and to run your bots, text is sent to an AI:
- With Locul AI, note text is processed on Locul’s servers through an AI provider and deleted after processing, normally within about 2 hours.
- With your own key (OpenRouter, OpenAI or Anthropic), text goes straight to that provider.
- With a local model (Ollama or LM Studio), or your own server, nothing leaves your computer or network.
- When your bots run on Claude, Codex or Grok, that company processes the chat. Settings > Cloud and local names who processes it.
Keep everything on this computer
- Click the Settings gear at the bottom of the left rail.
- Click Cloud and local.
- Under Where your memories are stored, choose Local-only.
- To keep chats on your computer or network too, click Change next to Your bots use by default and choose Your own server. See Run Locul with a local model.
In Local-only mode, AI apps on this computer (Claude Code, Codex, Claude Desktop) still reach your memories. AI on the web (ChatGPT, Grok, Claude on the web) cannot. You can switch back to Cloud at any time.
